Why is it important to manage Concussion correctly?

Our knowledge on concussion has advanced hugely in recent years. We now know that the injury is more serious than was previously thought and there are potentially long-term health risks. These risks have been shown to be significantly reduced when the injury is managed properly.

What is Concussion?

Concussion is a common injury. While awareness has significantly increased in recent years through concern from contact sports, it is important to note that concussions occur in everyday life.  All concussions, whether sport related or not, should be managed with the same diligence.

What we do know about concussion:

  • It is a traumatic brain injury
  • It can be caused by a direct head blow but also from forces transmitted to the head – eg a whiplash/violent shaking injury
  • It can cause a wide range of signs and symptoms
  • There are no structural changes in the brain – no injury can be seen on standard xrays/scans

What are the risks?

The most significant risks arise when there is further injury to the brain when it has not had time to recover.

If concussion are not managed properly there are the following risks:

  • Prolonged symptoms – sometimes referred to as post-concussion syndrome
  • Long term health issues – concerns around increased chance of developing dementia and other neuro-degenerative diseases
  • Death – an extremely rare complication called “Second Impact Syndrome”

The good new is that we now understand the importance of managing the injury correctly and have expert guidance on what to do. If followed correctly the message to players and parents is - Sport is safer than ever!
